St. Patrick’s Day

Here we are, it’s already coming up on St Patrick’s Day! The transition from pink and red hearts to GREEN clovers. This is THE big Irish day. Why do we celebrate St. Patrick’s Day? We’re simply commemorating the Christianization of Ireland during the 5th century by Maewyn Succat. The Irish patron saint was actually British. According to the legend, he was sold into slavery in Ireland when he was a teenager, became religious, escaped back to England, became an ordained priest named Patrick and started converting all of the Irish Celtic pagans to Christianity. He was the one who originally introduced the Holy Trinity to the King by using the shamrock thus making it a popular symbol. The holiday marks St. Patrick’s death and has been observed as a religious holiday in Ireland for over 1500 years. Ireland only officially started celebrating the day in 1903. Since the Emerald Isle is mainly catholic and St. Patrick’s Day usually falls on Lent, it used to be a quiet and religious holiday – until the 1960s, when a law allowed pubs to open on St. Paddy’s Day. (Never call it St. Patty’s Day!) Now, the 17th of March is a moment of celebration for those of Irish descent all around the world.

Green is everywhere, people buy goodies to accessorize their outfits and every pub is decorated in green and clovers for the big crowds coming in to drink the traditional green beer. Even rivers, monuments and even ski resorts have all been turned green to commemorate the occasion. Ironically, even though everyone goes green, Patrick himself apparently preferred blue and proof can still be seen on old Irish flags. During the 1798 Irish Rebellion, wearing the clover and the color green became a symbol of nationalism – and it stuck.

This is also a great time of year to take advantage of our fun and affordable Promotional Products for your company or personal party as giveaways or commemorative items. Some of our fun and most popular items are silicon wristbands, Can Koolers, stadium cups, lanyards, or Coasters to put under the many beverages that will be consumed. Don’t forget to decorate the place with printed inflatable balloons.

Veterans Day

Not everyone may know that Signet is a Veteran-owned Small Business. Through our employees and family, we represent the Army, Air Force, Navy, and Marines. We take great pride in our country and the soldiers, airmen, sailors, Marines, and Coast Guard that fought and continue to fight for this great nation. With Veteran’s Day approaching, we want to honor them and remind ourselves of the history of Veterans Day.

Originally known as Armistice Day, Nov 11th was originally set as a U.S. Holiday to celebrate the end of WWI in 1918 (although the legislation wasn’t passed until 1938). It was dedicated to the cause of world peace. In 1954, after the Korean War and WWII, veteran service organizations urged Congress to amend the Act of 1938 and changed it to Veteran’s Day to honor all American veterans of all wars. Although the date was changed to coincide with a three-day weekend, in 1975, Gerald Ford signed a law that returned the original observance to Nov 11th annually.

Additionally, a resolution was passed in 2001 to declare “National Veterans Awareness Week.” The resolution calls for educational efforts directed at elementary and secondary school students concerning the contributions and sacrifices of veterans. As President Eisenhower stated in 1954, “It is my earnest hope that all veterans, their organizations, and the entire citizenry will join hands to insure proper and widespread observance of this day. I have every confidence that our Nation will respond wholeheartedly in the appropriate observance of Veterans Day.”

Click here to watch an educational short video from the History Channel about Veterans Day.

In celebration of Veterans Day, we designed a custom made shirt – limited sizes and styles are available now in our store. Additionally, this week, we will offer a 10% discount to all Veterans. From all of us here at Signet – we thank you for your service and send our thoughts and prayers to all those still serving.

Challenge Coins

Challenge Coins

The tradition of the military carrying coins can be traced all the way back to the Civil War and World War I when Soldiers left for battle with a coin from home in their pocket and kept it after the conflict as a lasting remembrance of their wartime experiences. It was during World War II where the “Challenge Coin” became a tradition. American soldiers stationed in Germany after the war adopted that country’s popular “pfennig check.” The pfennig was the smallest unit of German currency. When someone announced a pfennig check, a soldier who could not produce one had to buy a round of drinks for his buddies. This tradition carried into the Vietnam War where Special Forces units minted a coin to express the unique identity and strong bond forged between them. Other units quickly began creating their own to build camaraderie and symbolize their pride of membership in an elite group. Today, coin checks are still a part of military life and are revered by troops in every branch of service. Various penalties are still handed out for those found without theirs. These custom coins – originally minted for military units – capture in metal the essence of their affiliation and their fierce pride. But not only are they carried by soldiers, sailors, airmen, and Marines, they are also carried by lawmen, firefighters, Government entities, and almost any member of a particular unit with a well-defined history and mission. The challenge coin is not merely a token, but a tangible source of pride.

Signet can supply you with lapel pins, Challenge Coins, and Medallions. When you have a special event, business anniversary, completion of a major project, or want to reward work that is above and beyond, gift those with a special commemorative pin, coin, or medallion. Contact us today to customize yours or pick from pre-made designs.

Please allow up to 4 weeks for completion, so please plan accordingly.

Fall Coats

Fashionable Coats

Winter doesn’t officially start until December 21st, but as we woke up the last couple of mornings and felt the crisp air, it was a clear reminder of how fast it’s approaching – it’s time to start thinking about coats. Although we are still able to enjoy the warm afternoons, the evenings and mornings are already dropping into the freezing temperature ranges. Don’t fret though, with our fast turnaround time, you can still get your stylish cold weather gear in plenty of time!

We have many varieties of coats to choose from – whether outside brings a mild chill or the extreme cold. You can also make your choice based on style and functionality. The ideal winter coat is made to keep you warm, easy to layer under, easy to move in, not too bulky and, ideally, something that you don’t feel like the Stay Puft Marshmallow Man Stay Puft while wearing it. Stay trendy with a double-breasted, mid-length, classic coat or add style and functionality with one of our parkas. Already have all of the basics? Then update your coat closet with classic fall colors like red, deep purple, and dark blues.

Here are a few tips on the top Coat Trends:
3-in-1 Coat – For versatility with the changing temperatures, go for the 3-in-1 coat that gives you the ability to add or remove a special liner and jacket shell. Layer them all together or wear them as individual pieces as the weather dictates.
High Collar – If you don’t like to wear scarves, a high-collar coat is the one for you! It’s an absolute life saver during the bitter winter months.
Hooded Wool Coat – Hooded coats are always great for extra protection against the cold. Pick a nice wool coat in a trendy color to protect yourself against the harshest cold temperatures.
Pea Coats – Slightly shorter and boxier than most coats, they are great for everyday wear and can be worn to work and social functions seamlessly and fashionably.
Trench Coats – This classic coat never goes out of style. Traditionally longer and belted, this coat can be worn to school, work, parties, etc. Single or double-breasted, it’s functional and fashionable.
Winter Parkas – Super warm and sporty, the parka is always a great choice. To keep a modern look, pick one that has a cinched waist to avoid the puffed up look. As the climate changes, so can the need…get one with a detachable hood or fur trim to keep you warm in the harshest temperatures and be removed when it gets warmer.

Regardless of the coat you choose, add your company logo, personalize it with a monogram, or just show off your unique style! Check out all of our varieties or come by Signet today to choose the right look for you! Not ready for the winter coat just yet? You can also choose from an assortment of fleeces, vests, and lightweight jackets. Whatever the need – we will find the one that works for you.

Get Your Pink On

Breast Cancer Awareness – Get Your Pink On!

Fall is fast upon us. While some people dread the upcoming cold, others revel in the changing season and beautiful, vast array of colors. The vibrant changing of the trees, the bright oranges of the pumpkin patch, and the greens and reds in the apple orchards – all waiting for the picking. But in October, our favorite color is Pink – the most recognized color for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is a disease that has or can change the lives of anyone in an instant. Whether it is a close friend, spouse, or family member, it’s a scary diagnosis that affects 1 in every 8 women (12%) in the U.S. For women, breast cancer has the highest death rate of all cancer types and is the 2nd most commonly diagnosed next to skin cancer. There is hope – there are very successful breast cancer treatments available, but it is critical that everyone is aware of how important early detection is to overcoming this disease. We may not be able to change the beautiful scenery outside to pink, but we can definitely show our support to all those around us that may be dealing with this disease directly or indirectly.

In honor of the fighters, survivors, and angels – Get Your Pink On! Put your inspirational message and the Pink Ribbon on Hats, Polo’s, T-Shirts, Socks, Bags, Promotional Products, and much more! Add the Pink Ribbon to your company logo, design your own awareness slogan by using our website app or coming by and talking with our talented Art Department. Fly a Pink Ribbon flag, hang a sign or banner for all who pass to see. At Halloween, hand out fun awareness gifts like silicone bracelets with motivating messages or an awareness button with inspirational sayings. The ideas and options are limitless – all of which will spread awareness, hope, and the vital message reminding women to perform self-exams or be seen by a doctor and could potentially save a life.

For the month of October, Signet will donate 10% of profits for all purchased Breast Cancer Awareness apparel and products to the Winchester Medical Center Cancer Center. So we encourage you to “Get Your Pink On” and help give the gift of health, safety, and education by spreading awareness. Together, we can make a difference.
