Get Your Pink On

Breast Cancer Awareness – Get Your Pink On!

Fall is fast upon us. While some people dread the upcoming cold, others revel in the changing season and beautiful, vast array of colors. The vibrant changing of the trees, the bright oranges of the pumpkin patch, and the greens and reds in the apple orchards – all waiting for the picking. But in October, our favorite color is Pink – the most recognized color for National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

Breast cancer is a disease that has or can change the lives of anyone in an instant. Whether it is a close friend, spouse, or family member, it’s a scary diagnosis that affects 1 in every 8 women (12%) in the U.S. For women, breast cancer has the highest death rate of all cancer types and is the 2nd most commonly diagnosed next to skin cancer. There is hope – there are very successful breast cancer treatments available, but it is critical that everyone is aware of how important early detection is to overcoming this disease. We may not be able to change the beautiful scenery outside to pink, but we can definitely show our support to all those around us that may be dealing with this disease directly or indirectly.

In honor of the fighters, survivors, and angels – Get Your Pink On! Put your inspirational message and the Pink Ribbon on Hats, Polo’s, T-Shirts, Socks, Bags, Promotional Products, and much more! Add the Pink Ribbon to your company logo, design your own awareness slogan by using our website app or coming by and talking with our talented Art Department. Fly a Pink Ribbon flag, hang a sign or banner for all who pass to see. At Halloween, hand out fun awareness gifts like silicone bracelets with motivating messages or an awareness button with inspirational sayings. The ideas and options are limitless – all of which will spread awareness, hope, and the vital message reminding women to perform self-exams or be seen by a doctor and could potentially save a life.

For the month of October, Signet will donate 10% of profits for all purchased Breast Cancer Awareness apparel and products to the Winchester Medical Center Cancer Center. So we encourage you to “Get Your Pink On” and help give the gift of health, safety, and education by spreading awareness. Together, we can make a difference.

S'Mores

Happy National S’mores Day!

I’m sure not many know that today is National S’mores Day. Observed on the 10th of August every year – campfire prime time – it is not proven to be an actual National Holiday (which requires an act of Congress), but is sponsored by the National Confectioners Association.

S’mores are made from three simple ingredients — graham crackers, toasted marshmallows, and melted chocolate bars. No one knows exactly when or where the popular campfire treat was born. The first recorded S’more’s recipe is in the 1927 publication, “Tramping and Trailing with the Girl Scouts.” Other reports of the S’mores origin are as early as 1925. The story goes that the first tasters thought it was so delicious they wanted some more. Imagine a troop of girls scouts all demanding SOME MORE! It most likely sounded like S’more ‒ thus the unique name was born.

Since that time, creative minds have come up with new versions of the original recipe. Here are several variations to the delicious original treat you may enjoy:

  • Wrap in a biscuit and add strawberries.
  • Add cookie dough.
  • Dip them in Baileys before putting on cracker.
  • Use Oreos, chocolate chip, or peanut butter cookies in place of the cracker.
  • “Pretty them up” with a cookie cutter and Hershey’s Chocolate Kiss.
  • Use White chocolate and pineapple with the crackers and marshmallow.
  • Use marshmallows, Dark chocolate, and pretzels in place of crackers.
  • For the ultimate chocoholic, use chocolate marshmallows, chocolate graham crackers, and bittersweet chocolate.

Applique

An applique is a design that is created by applying a smaller piece of fabric to a surface pattern that is used to decorate a garment or product. It is attached by using a satin stitch overlapping the edge of the material to ensure stability and a neat clean edge.

Make your company logo, favorite design, or personal monogram stand out from the rest by using the different features of fabric, a variety of our metallic and other specialty threads (we even have glow-in-the dark), or even combining your emblem with an applique.

Placket

A placket is the opening at the neck of a garment. Specifically with polo’s, the term placket refers to the double layers of fabric bands that surround and reinforce fasteners such as buttons, snaps, or zippers. It was originally designed to allow clothing to be put on or removed easily, but are now also being used as a design element.

Men’s polo plackets typically feature 2 or 3 buttons and women’s can have as many as 5 or 6 buttons and run halfway down the shirt to create a distinctive feminine look. The women’s polo can also feature a Johnny collar which is a placket style with an open, short V-neck that does not have fasteners.

Today’s placket trends are largely influenced by the expansion of fabric blends. With the move to polyester and spandex or Lycra blends, the shirts offer more stretch and flexibility that makes them more comfortable and drape better. These fabrics also allow for more vibrant colors that don’t fade as much or as fast as 100% cotton shirts.

Next time you are searching for the perfect polo, make sure to pay close attention to the placket and the various options you can choose from. Visit our website or contact one of your friendly Signet reps today to help you pick out yours!

Sunscreen

The Importance of Sunscreen

You have always heard about the importance of sunscreen. It’s imperative to remember that while we may love the outdoors, going to the beach, and how we look with a tan, there are serious consequences when we get too much sun exposure. Overexposure to the sun causes sunburn, premature aging of the skin, wrinkling, and skin cancer. Regardless of your skin type, everyone should apply sunscreen approximately 30 minutes before being in the sun and remember to reapply sunscreen after swimming or strenuous exercise as well as throughout the day if you work outdoors.

Help your clients get in the habit of wearing sunscreen 365 days a year through education and the correct tools they need. Show your clients you care about their health and wellbeing by providing them with the Sunscreen & Lip Balm stick. This broad spectrum formula protects against both UVA and UVB rays, reducing the risk of damage from overexposure. This compact 2-in-1 stick includes SPF 30 Sunscreen on one end and SPF 15 Lip Balm on the other while proudly displaying your business logo or tag line. The sunscreen and lip balm combo also meets FDA requirements and can easily fit into a purse, backpack, or even briefcase. You can order your customized business Sunscreen sticks now at Signet for 25% off during the months of July and August. Click here or contact us today to order yours!

Polos

The Classic Polo

The original polo wasn’t actually a polo at all, it was a button down long sleeve shirt created by John E. Brooks after attending a polo match in 1896 and noticing all of the collars were buttoned down to avoid flapping in the riders faces. The polo shirt became popular when it was worn by Rene Lacoste at the U.S. Open Tennis Championship in 1926. He wasn’t happy with the breathability of the standard starched long sleeve shirt, so he designed and wore a loosely-knit collared tee with a 3-button placket and short sleeves thus paving the way for the classic polo design of today. Lacoste and his friend then opened up their own line with the famous alligator logo only to be challenged in popularity by the Ralph Lauren Polo in 1972 that featured the polo player and quickly became an article of clothing worn as a societal status symbol. Fast forward to current day, the polo is still common attire that comes in many varieties of color, fabric, pattern, plackets, and style, but maintains the classic short sleeve, collared appearance. The alligator and Polo symbol have now been replaced with company logo and other embellishments.

Call your friendly Signet representative to pick from our many varieties of polo shirts…classic and modern…and have our expert team embroider your monogram, name, company logo, or whatever else one’s imagination inspires.
